Svalnäs

Svalnäs is a shallow and very beautiful sandy beach on Lake Vänern. On windy summer days days I'm there with some friends for kayak surfing. We share the beach with some guys doing kite surfing.

This week I have been there two times so far as the weather has been perfect for surfing. On Monday we had the last part of a kayaking course and this time it was how to handle the kayaks in a bit bigger seas. I think all learned a lot and had a lot of fun as well. On Wednesday the seas were higher and we were some friends playing in the seas. Some younger guys were trying some surfing in an open canoe.

The video is from the second day.

Guiding

Early June I hade five days guiding with a Norwegian school class. It was 24 students 14-15 years old, three teachers and one parent. This was the forth time I was guiding a class from Steinerskolen at Nesodden in Dalslands kanal. We startled on Monday, June 6th (the Swedish national day) at Kanalvillan where I have been working for about ten years as a guide.
The first night was at Baldersnäs and day two we paddled through seven locks upp to the lake Lelång at Bengtsfors. After a very nice evening we woke up to a rather windy day. As we were on an island there was no chance for us but to wait until the wind had calmed a bit before continuing. Around 2 PM (14:00) I considered it safe enough to enter the canoes and proceed towards Kråkviken. It was a long day before we arrived at Skifors at midnight, everyone was very tired and it was just strait into our tents (and me into my hammock).

The last day I paddled with them was down Svärdlång, one of Sweden's absolutely most beautiful lakes for canoeing, and then onto Laxsjön and the camp at Baldernäs again. During the last night a sudden storm came through our camp and one big tree was boken in half! I had to sadly leave this nice school class an my boss Åke was in charge the last two hours. It was probably the hardest trip I have done with this school but the kids did very well and their teachers should be very proud of them. Once again I met my friend Jonas (PE teacher for the class) and Grace who is the class head teacher. That was very nice to see them again.

24 months

I have now been kayaking 24 months in a row. And all these months at least one time on Lake Vänern!
Today was a fantastic day on the Lake and the warmest yet this year. +8° C in the air. Still a bit of snow and ice but it is melting away rather quickly now. I started at Sunnanå and turned back at Köpmannebro, most of the way outside the islands as there are still ice inside the islands on most places.

At the start at Sunnanå

Found a nice lagoon where I could take some coffee

The sun was very nice today

I will try to save that canoe when the ice is gone

Back at Sunnanå. The marina is covered in ice.

Open canoe in river

Some friends invited me to join them in a a trip with open canoe down a river in Norway and Sweden. Also for a bit of kayaking on lake Siljan in Dalarna.

I put my Anas Acuta and an old VKV Kåre kayak that need some repairs on my car and drove for five hours to Mora in Dalarna. There we repacked and with two cars me, Olle, Fredrik and Linda went to Sälen where we got picket up by the canoeing company.
They took us with two Mad River canoes to Ljördalen in Norway where we started the trip.
Then the next three day we paddled down the river back to Sälen. Fantastic weather with very few clouds but a bit cold a night. But that was OK as the mosquitoes were at a manageable amount.

Some white water at places, the longest 3 km and some smooth waters in between. Just an amazing wilderness with some fishing cottages at a few places. We also saw some very few fishermen doing some fly fishing.

Three days with nice company, good food, fantastic weather and fabulous nature. How can it be better?

On my way north!
That's where we went.
  • 53,2 km
  • 47 h
  • Average speed 6,9 km/h
  • Maximum speed 10 km/h
  • Difference in height 112 meters
